InSea2® is an extract obtained from brown algae Fucus vesiculosusandAscophyllum nodosum, produced by canadian company InnoVactiv.
It is an ingredient produced by aqueous extraction and standardized in polyphenols (mainly phlorotannins) at NLT 20%.
InSea2® has been evaluated in several in-vitro, in-vivo and clinical studies in which a significant effect has been observed towards reduction of glycemic and insulinemic post-prandial peak by administration of InSea2® right before a glucose load. In addition long terms effects on fasting glycemia and glycated heamoglobin levels have been detected.
Mechanism of action includes a reversible block by brown algae polyphenols towards those intestinal enzymes, such as alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase, that are responsible for hydrolysis of diet starch and disaccharides into base glucose moieties; this activity slows down the digestion of complex carbohydrates and also absorption of glucose, inducing a reduced secretion of insulin for the uptake of hematic sugar. Another effect is the reduction of hypoglycemia which follows the action of insulin; hypoglycemia often causes loss of attention and craving which can push for further food assumption out of main meals.
